Helping People Nationwide Find Meaning in the Everyday

Mundancing is the art of dancing through the mundane with presence, love, and joy.

WILLINGNESS

Not long after I began painting, I declared, “I am an artist. I am a painter.” This was audacious, considering I’d barely figured out how to apply paint smoothly to paper. Still, something in me knew. My hand was learning what my heart loved.

Maybe that’s how many beginnings happen. Something delights us before we know what to do with it. We feel a tug, an impulse, an inexplicable Oh, I want to do that. We may have no particular talent yet, no evidence of where it will lead. But the heart has already leaned in. And willingness says yes.

A Love Letter to the Beginner’s Heart

There’s something sumptuous about being a beginner. We don’t know yet what we’re doing. Our hands are clumsy, our movements uncertain. We haven’t developed proficiency or learned all the rules. And still, we reach.

We pick up the brush. Move our body in a new way. Wear something that feels more like us. Raise our hand. Make the thing. Show the thing. Say out loud what we’re beginning to recognize within ourselves.

The hand learns what the heart loves.

The beginner’s heart doesn’t require certainty. It’s willing to enter into relationship with something simply because it feels alive there. Of course, self-doubt may come along. Who do you think you are? What if you’re not very good?

But self-doubt is remarkably fragile when met with action. One mark, one step, one small expression of yes can pop it like a soap bubble.

We don’t have to stop doubting ourselves to begin trusting what delights us.

And we certainly don’t have to wait until we’re proficient to give ourselves fully to what we love. A beginner’s heart knows something simpler: I love this. And love leads.

Willing to Be Seen

There’s another kind of willingness that arrives when what we love becomes visible. Are we willing to fully express ourselves while our hands are still learning?

Some of us might worry about looking foolish. But foolish to whom? Those inclined to judge us will probably find something to judge. We don’t need to consume their judgments or make them the measure of our joy. We can keep following what calls us.

Willingness isn’t about pushing ourselves toward something we think we should do. It’s allowing ourselves to be drawn toward what makes us more alive. Love calls. The heart recognizes. The body answers. And we become available to what happens next.

Maybe the fascination becomes a lifelong devotion. It might change shape or simply give us one beautiful season of discovery. Outcome isn’t our department. We don’t need to know where any of it will lead.

Willingness is how we make ourselves available to the life within us that hasn’t been lived yet.

The heart leans toward what it loves. And we follow.
